What are your thoughts about this model? 1988 R100RS

The mono shock Airheads were considered to be among the best for handling and stiffness in the frame. One has to be used to the hunched over riding style. When I had a '78 R100RS, it was fun to ride but after an hour my wrists and forearms were tired. I believe K75 handlebars can be installed which has a bit of a pull back relieving some of the weight on the arms.

Great machine and a fun touring bike..that can also scrape the valve covers if set up properly. But there is that thing about the riding postion..depends on your size and arm length. Barbacks or other bars can work miracles.

I have a 78RS and I love it.
They improved the handling to make it quicker and stiffer in turns than my 78. The 78 is a tiny bit stabler on straight stretches, and I mean tiny bit.

One of the other things they did with the newer RS bikes of the year you are looking at is they moved and improved the wiring harness. In the older bikes, a lot of "stuff" was crammed into the headlight shell making some wiring job, and fuse changes a bit of challenge for big ham fisted people like me. All that "stuff" is under the gas tank now.

Other than that, it is all airhead, with all the good and bad of airheads.

As for buying the bike in the picture, I can't say much except do a very good inspection. I found from the experience of buying my RS, a pretty face can hide lots of sins. After two years, I have finally gotten some hidden problems fixed. My soiled dove is reformed and pretty now. Cheers, St.

One of the fellows who hangs out at the Beemer Barn here in NY, bought a mono shock RS and spent a few dollars on increasing the HP and torque to 77 levels. Turned into a very nice bike. St.
