Mystery picture

Post by delorean »

I just stumbled across a picture of my dad from 1974-75 and noticed a BMW motorcycle with a funky fairing and/or turnsignals(), siren(?) and windshield. Can somebody identify this motorcycle??

I'd say it's a SWB R60/5.

I'd say it's a SWB R60/5 or possibly the R50/5. I would appear that the carbs are the slide type which were used on these bikes. Likely a police bike...the tank seems to have a compartment on top which was not standard with the /5-on bikes.

Police version, correct!

I had another look for pics of these police units with their atrciously oversized fairing/windshield. In this attached picture, it shows the bike in its entirety. That tank compartment looks unusual indeed. My dad was in the Dutch Army so maybe it was also used by Military Police, who knows., he would but passed away 18 years ago.

I've never personally seen a post-/2 tank with a tool compartment on top but I've seen pictures of them all the way up through the /7 series. What I have seen, however, are police tanks with the compartment on top. On the police bikes, the compartment was used to house the radio. The radio compartment looks the same as the "regular" compartment when closed but you can tell if it's a true radio compartment because there will be a conduit inside the compartment going out the bottom of the tank. This was used to run the radio wiring. I have a /5 police tank like this on my /6.

Here are some photos of the tank on a 1979 former German police R60/7.

Very Cool! (Police Tank compartment)

Looks odd seeing this on a gas tank but heh, that's an ingenious way to conceal a radio :)
Thanks again!!
