gear box oil choices

Post by c.d.iesel »

the GL4 gear oil is the key - and good - for WARM/HOT climate
riding - same for the rear final drive and drive shaft

I prefer 50 (Summer) or 40 (into cold Fall riding) MORRIS ELITE
straight weight motor oil in my gearbox.

And 40 (Summer) and 30 (cooler Fall) in the R27 motor
Yes - I change oil a lot to suite the climate,
and keep internals clean.

It takes a long, l o n g ride before the transmission
oil to 'free up' and your already 'touchy' shifting to become
smoother - on cooler rides. Most of these bikes today only travel
a few miles , stop n go, for errands and morning rides.
Not a lot of heat in the gear box.

The original BMW Rec gear box oil was the same as your motor oil.

here is the information, and contact for the lubricants
Tell Robert that Creighton sent you.

Tranny Oil for R25/2

Post by VBMWMO »

I'm looking to do my first fluid change on my "new" '52 R25/2. The owner's manual says to use engine oil. I called Vech and ordered fluids (before I had the manual in hand) and they sent me GL4 80w90 gear oil. I understand the GL4 part...bronze parts, etc. But should I be using engine oil instead? I have no clue if the seals have been changed to accomodate the gear oil. I'm at least 4th owner, and probably 5-6th owner. The bike was in police service through the late '50s and '60s but have no idea what type of maintenance might have been done on it.
