Charlie -

Nice to get it running. From my experience with the twins, I would look at:

- are the advance weights sticking to their maximum position. The advance mechanism may need to be cleaned and lubed.
- did you adjust the carb after warming the bike up. The settings are different between cold and warm. Fast idle is a classic symptom for carb adjustments made on a cold bike and then after a warm up ride, the idle is elevated.
- look more at the throttle cable as it might be hanging up. At idle, I would think there should be slack in the cable, usually around 1-2mm.

I would certainly consider looking at the carb slide to be sure that it is coming back down to the lower or idle position.

Hopefully you can find something simple to get the bike to idle normally.

Hmm, Will have another look at the carb. Is the sprung screw on the left side of the carb the idle adjuster? Where would I find the air/fuel mixture screw? Is it also on the Left with a locking nut?

Advance weights? Where are these located?

Advance weights are part of #15 in this picture:

This is located at the front of the engine, on the front of the camshaft.

As for the carb:

I can't see this well enough to picture out the idle stop screw and the air-fuel mixture. I think 17-20 is associated with the air-fuel mixture. 21-22 is probably the idle stop screw.

Hi Kurt. Since your first reply I had a look at the online manual. Very useful. Thanks for your help. Advance weights are the same as a governor I guess.

Charlie.

I'd also make sure your slide is not sticking (ie: the whole throttle cable through). It's easy on the twins to see where your slide position is by taking off the air filter.

You may want to check for air leaks at the gasket holding the carb onto the head. Some people spray a little carb cleaner/ether around area and see if the idle rises. If it rises, you have a air leak, which will interfere with your tuning.

Do not spray a bunch of ether on a hot engine.

Well team I have sorted it. :D

The carb slide was stuck halfway down. Easy peasy. Runs like a dream.

Thanks for all the usefull replies. The online manuals are a great help.

Not taken her out on the road yet. All the roads in the uk are covered in salt due to the cold weather!!! :(

Will let you know when It takes flight for the first time,

Charlie

Hi Team,

Following on from my previous post I managed to get my R27 running today.
Everything works really well on the bike.
The only trouble I have is that she will not idle slowly.
It just wants to rev its nuts off! Where am I going wrong.
I have tried adjusting the idle screw, (the large sprung screw which comes out of the right hand side of the carb), to no effect! Also tried to make an adjustment to the throttle cable adjuster at the top of the carb. This did reduce the engine revs but the I have run out of adjustment! Maybe the throttle is sticking open in the carb? It has been sat for 16 years! Any hints etc etc?
