1968 R60/2 Choke

Duane has a section about air cleaners with chokes on his website...somewhat near the bottom:

http://w6rec.com/duane/bmw/slash_2/detail/index.htm

One of the pictures shows the word "auf" which is German for on.

Great. Thank you. Mine had been painted over long ago but after seeing the photos that where provided I could see where it says AUF (OFF). Just what I needed. Thank you for all the help.

where it says AUF (OFF)

Remember, AUF means On. :!: The German word AUS means Off. There are better German speakers here, but that's what google tells me.

Hmmm, believe auf is part of a separable prefix, used to indicate up/upwards/opening....?

My '57 air cleaner has "auf" and "zu" - zu = closed (choked). Feel up inside the opening and you can tell the difference.

As I remember, it's best not to try and translate literally from German to English.

Probably better to think in terms of "open" and "closed" for auf and zu, applicable terms for both the petcock and the choke. The restriction of the air flow occurs in the zu (closed) position. In English we would say the choke is "on", in German it is merely "closed"....

Yeah, my brother rode his old Dream around Japan with the choke on after a mechanic with minimal English made the same on/open translation mistake.

I agree with sticking your finger up there and making sure it's open. It's possible to put the choke/lever in wrong when assembling the air cleaner which makes it unusable. At least on a /3.

I never had to choke any of mine, but they all like to be tickled for 2.5 seconds on each jug.

I recently purchased a 1968 R60/2 and understand that the choke is operated by sliding the lever on the Air Filter. However I am unclear as to if the choke is on when the lever is slid toward the outside of the bike or toward the inside. Can anyone give me some advise regarding this?
