Recommended oil for 1965 R60/2

Post by schrader7032 »

I read your post on the research on your bike. I, too, am impressed with the level of interest that BMW shows on our old bikes. I also got the archives to provide some background on my '69 R69S.

As for oil, Bruce said it...use a good quality oil and change it relatively often. I would add that the oil should have the API rating of SG which contains blended wear inhibitors such as ZDDP, etc. These have been removed from later rated oils (SH and above) because they have been shown to clog catalytic converters on cars...our bikes don't have them! I also prefer petroleum oil over synthetic...this seems to a personal choice each of us make. I've heard that synthetics can find their way past small spots and leak where dino oil wouldn't. A semi-synthetic (like Golden Spectro) might be a good compromise. But you still need to change it often and at the prices of synthetics, that can hurt.

Given your location, you might need to consider the lighter weights of oil. The manual would have called for straight 30w in the winter and 40w in the summer. I haven't been to Norway in the dead of winter, but the summers were not all that warm as I recall! So, I would bias the weights to the lower end.

I have used BMW 10W40 oil, which many recomend. Vech recommends Shell Rotella T in 30W or 40W, as needed. I am trying that now. Change oil often and early.

I found an Oslo-based BMW repair shop which actually services - and supplies parts for - old BMW machines. After talking to a guy who knew a lot more about my bike than I do, I ended up buying Castrol GTX3-4T 15/40W Mineral Oil. This oil is specially designed for old engines with high mileage.

They do have a website (http://www.mcoslo.no) but I'm afraid it's all in Norwegian.. : ) No "old parts" here though.. I assume they order them from Germany on demand.

Another question:

Can anyone give me a suggestion as to which type of oil to use?

I've read some earlier posts about this, and 10W/30 and 20W/50 seems to be the choice.
