Here is a link to the project I started last Sept. This wan't even the best thing in this guys barn. He has too many projects and not enough time.

That project worries me. The outcome looks like a restoration, but for the mechanicals one photo says: " I chose to just clean the motor and not tear it apart." So this good-looking bike still has its barn-find mechanicals.

Your photo looking up into the engine says: "This is how clean it was inside, the owner had changed the oil often." This was after you had cleaned it. No matter if the owner had not changed the oil often, it would have looked the same. That is no reflection of the condition of the engine.

After 31K and 40 years of which the last 10 were in a barn, the engine and transmission need rebuilding with bearings and seals and whatever else may be wrong, to live up to the new cosmetics. This bike needs to come apart again. But that might be the next owner's problem.

The reason I chose to just reinstall the motor was because I am new to these bikes and I just wanted to see how well it worked before I tear it apart. I did not clean anything inside before taking the picture. I thought it would be fun to ride the bike this spring/summer and then have a pro go though it.

You have done a lot of work there, and she looks pretty.

But ... why stainless hubcaps? They do not look right, and the original style hubcaps are readily available.

Ditto exhaust system.

The picture is at this location. It looks up into the crankcase and the oil screen. They both look clean of oil and dry.

When the oil pan is removed, that area has a lot of oil left in it. Those who have replaced an oil pan gasket may remember cleaning the oil off the walls of the crankcase and out of the oil screen to make it dry for the new gasket.

I think you're refering to www.snafu.org . It's owned by Marco Hyman, who is a local here in the SF bay area and a friend of mine. However, I don't believe he visits this forum. He is active on the slash2 Yahoo email list.

I didn't even know that stainless hub caps were available until I called Bench Mark Works. He said he thought that they looked good so I went with it. Everyone that sees it likes the bike, not that any of them would know what a correct one would look like. You are right though that they look a little shiny now that they are on. I guess I am just a sucker when someone says stainless steel.
