Per Roland Slabon's book:

For the late 1953 to the end of the 1954 model run, "The headlamp bucket was unique, however, in that it had a shallow depression at the bottom, underneath, and near the pointed end, ostensibly to clear the fork lock bracket that was part of the steering head forging. After 1955, this shallow dish was eliminated."

Just "reporting" what I've read. I wasn't there, I don't know how many spare headlight buckets they made that eventually found their way onto bikes. No one will really know...

I thought this bit of BMW trivia would generate some discussion; guess not. The depression was for clearance to the horn of the R25/3 and just went along for the ride on all the other 1953 through 1955 plunger frame bikes. True to form BMW used what they had until they ran out, probably in 57 or 58. See the picture on page 95 of BMW Motorrader.......Comet

Does anyone know why the depression was in the bottom of the headlight shell used on the late plunger frame and early Earles fork bikes?????...........Comet
