Tires for R50, R60

Post by schrader7032 »

The 110 of that tire is metric and computes to about 4.3 inches in width. So it is slightly wider than the "4.0" inch tire. But then, a 110 tire will measure differently between different manufacturers....probably 4.0 is not 4.0 in all cases. But the 110 should work...just look for any issues with clearance with the frame. I have a /7 and the width of the tire can be an issue as a too wide one hits the inside of the swingarm.

Hey Nicebob,
Another option is the Metzeler 56S Block C5 3.50-18. You can get these from Benchmark Works. Modern rubber compound with a retro look. I have these on my 1959 R-60 and they ride and handle great. Highly recommend them if you plan to ride your bike.
I'll try to get an image up on my Smugmug and put a link here so you can see them.

... I'm sliding towards Chene Shin, read the bit below for R26 & R27, and looked in the Dennis Krik catalog. The ones that will fit are Himax, Barracuda, and Marquis matched sets (I need both), and I like the looks of the treads of the Marquis. Anyone with experience with any of these tires? Will the 110/90 H-18 fit the rear of a R50/2? Is the equivalent of a 4.00H-18?
I use these on my R27 and /2:
F – Cheng Shin Hi-Max Front C906 100/90
R – Cheng Shin Hi-Max Rear C907 100/90
They are a good tire for the money, but not the best that money can buy.

The 110/90 is like a 4.00. I don't like using that size on a /2 because:
1. BMW matched the 25/8 final drive to the 100/90 or 3.50. BMW introduced the 4.00 tire on the 1968 bikes, matched to a 27/8 final drive. Using the 110/90 or 4.00 tire with a 25/8 final drive will make the bike a little sluggish.
2. The 110/90 or 4.00 tire will prevent the rear wheel from being withdrawn unless the tire is deflated or the shock bolt is backed out.
3. The 110/90 or 4.00 tire may touch the ground if the center stand has any wear on its mounts. This further complicates maintenance and removing the tire, and also makes the bike less stable.
4. Some say the large tire adversely affects handling, making the bike fall into turns.

Tires for R50, R60

Yeah, it seems to be discussed every 6 months or so, but I didn't find clear & current thoughts for the R50's tires. I've owned my /2 for 27 yrs, traveled a bit, and every time I go to change tires, "they don't make them in that size." I'm sliding towards Chene Shin, read the bit below for R26 & R27, and looked in the Dennis Krik catalog. The ones that will fit are Himax, Barracuda, and Marquis matched sets (I need both), and I like the looks of the treads of the Marquis. Anyone with experience with any of these tires?

Thanks.
