Transmission breather bolt on R60?

Post by agentsjrc »

Hello all, got a quick question:

I recall that my past bikes, /5 and /7s, had a bolt by the speedo cable that vented the transmission. I may have this recollection wrong, but thought that it should be the same for my 1960 R60.

That said, I've had some gear oil (yes, sulfur smell) leaks-- indeed puddles-- getting worse recently, which I noticed yesterday during a funeral cortege ride for a local biker (I'd topped up levels the night before based on the handbook, which I realize can be a bit generous). The leak would appear to be failing seals, but I went to check that vent bolt this morning, and it turns out to be solid! No hole at all (see pic).

Like I say, I could be wrong...but I thought the bolt was supposed to look like the other pic attached. There's gear oil actually coming up and dripping under the speedo cable boot. Jeez. What say ye gurus?

While we're on the subject, anyone have a vintage BMW service guy/gal they like in southern England? I used to live in the SF Bay Area and had the likes of Duane et al to offer kind (sometimes sharp :-) advice. Over here I've only come across Anson Restorations, and they're wayyyy up north. Thoughts welcome. Thanks all!

On my 1960 R60, the bolt is vented. I believe it is factory original but can't be positive.

The very early ones (maybe into ‘57) were un-vented bolts. Some pushed oil out and some didn’t.

Mine's definitely been a pusher. In the photo you can see the oil running out from the cable entry point and around the boot.

The seals will need replacing anyway, but in the meantime I'm off to Salis to find a holy bolt... Thank you all for the speedy replies and help!

Anyone know if the post-1970 R bike bolts fit the pre-1970 R bike bolts? Can't seem to find a UK-based supplier that has a pre-1970 one, although one place has a post-1970 one but isn't sure it would fit. Thanks for any help!

I don't think they are the same. I checked RealOEM for the part number and when I click on the part number, it gives me a wide cross reference to what other models that the part is used on. The part for the /2 era bikes is 23111030174 but the range of other vehicles doesn't not include /5-on bikes. Try as I might, I can't seem to find the part number for the later bikes. :?

Update: The part number for a R75/5 is 23 11 1 230 599.

Thanks, Kurt, that's much appreciated! I'm having trouble finding the pre-1970 part in the UK, and not loving the idea of paying about $20 postage to have a bolt sent over from the US or EU. Jeez. Motorworks doesn't seem to have it, and isn't replying to queries... the hunt continues (as does the gear oil venting around the speedo boot!).

agent sjrc-
A simple solution might be to remove the bolt, find a friend with a drill press or preferably a lathe, and bore a center hole to match a vented bolt.
The hole appears to be 1mm in diameter, (as a 1mm wire just passes through it) then chamfer the end with a larger bit, to match, same as the picture you've provided, and Robert's your father's brother. (or something like that...)
Best-
George
