Sidestand?

Post by bigdave »

Working on a 1958 R60 that was purchased as a "project". Some together and some in boxes etc.
The sidestand included was not installed. Pictures show both sides. The curve of the mount will only fit the frame at the rear of the lower frame aft of where it reduces diameter. It will fit between the shifter and the kick start bumper, but the protrusion sits outside of the shifter. Doesn't seem like a good fit.
Does anyone have such a sidestand that is installed successfully? I would really appreciate your comments and a picture if possible. Maybe someone knows what brand this stand is.
This list is so helpful. I do search for my questions, but have not found anything like this stand.
Thanks in advance.

Forgot to mention: it is a Flanders (later offered by Brown) stand.

Hi Dave-
That's the old Flander Stander, it was offered by the BMW west coast distributor back when the /2 was current, and maybe a little while after the /5 came around.

As far as I recall, it was the only aftermarket side stand offered for quite a while and many were sold.
That was because folks buying a new /2 were not fond of the factory version, which was hard to reach and could stand the bike too upright; and the early (R50-R69) factory version mounted on a smaller diameter pin at the front engine mount and would sometimes get snapped off if kick starting.

The Flanders was lousy, it looked crude and worked awful, (opposite of the factory stand, it leaned the bike over way too far) the U-bolts could get stressed and break off, and if one deployed the stand and sat on the bike, (or worse yet tried kick starting it) the solid section of rod at the top of the stand would dent the bike's vertical frame member.
The only thing going for it was it was easier to reach.

Oh, and I didn't care for it.
But they were a genuine must have accessory for years.

When the Brown and the Hall stands came along, the Flanders pretty much disappeared.
Best-
George

I have been making for decades now various iterations of this sidestand design. It is easy to deploy, easy to retract and robust.

This might be the Flanders accessory from their catalog:

Once again the knowledge of this group is shown. Thanks for the info and pictures. I will try it when it is ready to get off the lift.

Gurus,
Now that we have identified the sidestand as a Farley, does anyone know of a source of the spring for it? I have tried my usually helpful hardware sources and found ones too weak and too strong, but not one that will work.
Anyone know a good source?
Thanks,
Dave
