Just a clarification do you think that riveted support bracket had removed before?
I’m almost 100 percent I’m the first one to remove it since it left the factory. The picture is hard to tell from but I removed the paint and primer from the repaint. What you see is part of the original paint and strips. To me it looks like the pinstriper set his brush down and started the striping in both directions and on left and right side of fender. The thing that puzzles me is the none painted area. All speculation just trying to reason it out. I can see the brush full of paint dripping down at the start of the strip. Ron

It was pretty normal back then to only paint the visible stuff. Most cars didn't come with paint inside the hollow area's for example. At best they were dipped in some kind of primer. I remember my dad always taking his new car first thing to the Tectyl station.

In this case, yes I think the straps were riveted first, then painted. The riveting process might otherwise damage the paint.

Yes, the brace is riveted on before the fender is painted. This is actually a design improvement over the prewar BMW where the brace is riveted below the fender allowing water and dirt to accumulate and rust the fender out. With the brace above, less chance for rust out, less likelihood for dirt/water to collect. Here's the prewar type...
The real trivia question is "what is the reason for the the middle hole in the brace that's not riveted"?

Thanks that interesting I sure you’re right on rusting with brackets under fender. I know I seen plenty of old cars with rust between brackets and fenders, running boards.
I was wondering why the center hole myself?????

The repaint was more forgiving on the rear fender. A few hours with lacquer thinner and a lot of rubbing got the job done.
I got the front stripped and ready for paint my try to blend in some new paint on the top side of the rear fender. Ron

I bought one of these when I was 18 new at a BMW dealer. Those days they where considered unattractive compared to the sexy looking British and Harleys with their chrome and power. I never had to worry about anyone stealing my bike. Today is a completely different story. Now everybody thinks they are beautiful. Build it to shine when you aren't riding it you can just stare at it to get joy out of it.

I would love to restore a /2 but it seems like a lot of people think they have solid gold to sell. I see so many "barn find"s with price tags far in excess of what I am willing to pay because I know the cost of total restorations both to make things shine and to make a bike run right.
Maybe one day I will get a deal on a bike that makes sense to restore. So far I stick to /7 to 95, bikes I can find them at a reasonable price more often than /2 bikes.

Regardless of your intentions for your bike, enjoy the project, and the riding afterwards. St.
This came up for sale today, in the UK, in case it's your kind of bike. Bob Porecha was the go-to man for pre-70 BMs, so it's probably in very good shape.

Do you have an accurate idea on the milage ? The oil slinger service is a key bit that has to be done. Having just completed a 62 R69s full restoration, I can say to do it right is not cheap. Also consider replacing wheel and swing arm bearings.
