12V Snap on Kit from Vech

Post by brettironbutt »

I put on a snap on 12V kit from Vech last year..... two questions:
1. It looks like it only has a single brush... should I carry a spare, does anyone know the part number, and is it easy to change on the side of the road?

2. At idle, I am reading 12V, at speed I am reading 14V. Is this normal?

Thanks!
Brett

As for 12v vs 14v, I would think that's normal. On my R100/7, a 12v system, ideally I should see 14.0 or slightly higher at speed. If it were in the low 13s, that would be a problem in that it would barely be enough to run the ignition and charge the battery. On my /2 machines, which are 6v, Vech has always said you should see 7.2v when running. So, that scales up to over 14v if it were the 6v system were doubled.

No, you did not look close.
Some facts about that alternator.
The brush assembly has 2 brushes, one for each slip ring of the rotor.
The brush assembly IS the voltage regulator, the brushes are in it. They are NOT replaceable. The voltage regulator is the same one used on a K bike alternator.

Yes, it puts out 13 - 14 volts and 200 watts.
If, for whatever reason, you ever remove the stator, (which has the regulator and brush assembly on it) be be very careful when you re install it on the engine, you can BREAK a brush when you put it back on. You MUST push each brush up into the holder, (one at a time) when you put the stator back on the engine.

Vech,
Can you confirm if the VR you are referring to is for the K100 from the 80s? Part 12 31 1 459 286?

The black circle seems to be the wrong orientation.

When I had those alternators produced, I was told that it was the same regulator as a K bike.
But it is NOT the same. Transpo was the mfg of the regulator/brush assembly, I am pretty sure.
You can look them up on the web.
I no longer possess any of my vendor records, they were part of the sale of bench mark works.
I no longer have any information, sorry.
