Vapor blast wheel hub?

Post by Starklint »

Hi all,

I'm in the proces of doing a full restoration of my 1959 R69 and am piling up the parts that is going to be vapor blasted.

Should I give the wheel hub a vapor blast as well? What's the usual procedure?

I had mine "vapor blasted" for my R69S and they came out great. I would do it again.

Hi Starklint-
Vapor blasting the wheel hubs is a very nice way to clean up the wheel hubs, much more thorough, and less tedious, than doing a good hand cleaning.

But wouldn't recommend doing it unless already disassembling the wheel for other reasons, as the time spent to remove/replace the bearing stack and despoke/respoke (especially truing) far outweighs the time spent blasting, think I spent about 15 minutes per hub blasting.
When finished blasting, flush well with hot water to remove all residue, (especially bearing stack tunnel) and quick dry with compressed air to prevent flash rust on the cast iron.
Best-
George
