Is this a Heinrich fairing?

Post by pkrpkr »

This was on my R69S I bought in the 1980s. It's aluminium. Is this a Heinrich fairing? It looks different from the police Heinrich fairings.

I'd guess it's a Heinrich, if it's aluminum-
Though it may be for a /5; the shape is a bit different from the Heinrich for the Earles fork era.

(and a side note here- I wouldn't mind at all if we went back to calling the Earles era the /4, as many of us did when the /5 came out; postwar we had the /2, /3, Earles, /5, /6, /7, etc, just sayin')

Anyway, the alloy edging around the high outside corners, the handlebar and headlight mounts, and 7" headlight hole are all the same as the Heinrich for the Earles bike.
The Earles Heinrichs had serial numbers stamped in the center of the windshield mount on the rider's side of fairing, though they might have deleted that when they got to the /5.
Here's a couple of pics of Earles era Heinrichs I use for cold riding, though its been a while since I had the urge for a cold ride.
(sorry about pic quality, too much of a hurry..)
Best-
George

When were the Earles fork bikes called /4s? Probably the only thing that comes close to the /5 is the US models. But the Earles bikes? That's a category all its own. And /3 was already taken. We know that the '55-60 bikes didn't have a designation then the '61 models came out and they were the "upgraded" models so they were /2s.

There is a /5 with a Heinrich fairing on this page:

Another view of a /2 Heinrich fairing:

Thanks for the info.
It looks like the red fairing on that page.
I don't see any numbers stamped on it.
For /5 is possible (I bought the R69S with this fairing on it in the 1980s) although I wonder if they still were from aluminum by that time.

They might not have stamped #s on ones made in the post Earles era.
Here's a later one with a cut down windshield, out of fiberglass.
Heinrich? Dunno, it has no markings on it.

Hi Kurt-
When were the Earles fork bikes called /4s?
Back when the /5 was introduced, the bench racing consisted of a lot of speculation about the merits and faults of the new bikes, and also pondering how the postwar designations went from /2, to /3, jumped over the Earles, to the new /5.
And so we wondered why didn't the Earles run have a slash number, and decided the factory had implied a /4 by designating the new model a /5.
But when I'd ask for /4 parts at the parts counter, all I got was a reaction similar to yours!
My memory doesn't recall having to ask for Earles bike parts as /2 till years later, when dealers started stocking a few Earles era parts again, but that could be my memory.
So the /4 never got its chance; oh well!
Best-
George
