If I were in your shoes I'd be looking into the feasibility of replacing it with a few years younger vented FD.

Sorry, was out of pocket for a while. Any good welder can weld the final drive.

Look at this article on the R 68 case repair that will be highlighted in the upcoming issue.

I have welded various items. After welding I used a grinder to get it close, then sandpaper to get it perfect, but after the sandpaper it will be too smooth. You can use a punch and some patience, course sandpaper and a hammer, and several other means to the "stipple" the aluminum to make it look correct. Once you blast it after that you will never be able to know it was welded!

I suggest fixing the one you have! :-)
