Bar End Flasher 6V FESTOON LED

Post by germancarguy »

I have installed a pair "Bar End Flasher 6V FESTOON LED" on my /2. They light when selected but will not flash. I have tried several flasher relays with no luck. Anyone have any experience with this problem ? As a note, I have also installed a LED tail-light and headlight that work very well, both are very bright with very little draw.

Don't LED bulbs require some additional resistance in the circuit to work properly? The LED bulbs don't trigger the flashers because the small resistance isn't sensed by the flasher. What sort of changes did you have to make to the other LED sights you installed?

No changes to the headlight and tail light, they were plug and play into the original sockets. Both are very bright, Vech did point out the head light lens requires a shift in filament position to utilize a proper hi/low beam shape. I won't really know till I ride it. I am waiting on Barrington Motors to finish the motor rebuild so I have a little time to figure it out. The roller is ready to go.

You need an LED compatible flasher. I had the same issue with the original flasher.

I have tried a couple of LED flasher units with no luck, maybe I have made bad choices. Which flasher did you use ? Also after reading "schrader7032" post, I will compare the resistance between a filament bulb and a LED and try a resistor but fear it will dim the LED.

Get an LED flasher with a ground wire, and you should be good to go. I tried several flashers, and the only one that worked was the type with an external ground wire.

I recently used a flasher like this one on my '68 R50 bar end Hella turn signals:

https://www.mikesxs.net/sparck-moto-uni ... relay.html

It's two prong, no ground wire. My bike has a 12 V conversion, but this works on either 6 or 12V. It is polarity sensitive, I had to switch the leads around to make it work.

For those running 12 V, I used these LED bulbs , which are rated at 400 lumens, and brighter than heck:

Unfortunately they are not rated for 6V but no doubt similar alternatives are out there. Like all LEDs you have to check the polarity before installing, by just using a couple of test leads

With this setup the bar ends actually become useful daytime turn signals!

Hi Adam-
What is the color like with your brighter led barend bulbs, does it come through the lens as amber?
Thanks-

Also, LED's are polarity sensitive, they only work with the current flowing in one direction because they are diode's.

George, to my eye the amber color looks good, just a lot brighter than with the incandescent bulb
