/2 VDO Tachometer.

/2 BMWs had two different styles of VDO tachometers. One drove from the cam and the later ones from the oil pump. They were different ratios though! Does anyone know how to tell the difference between the tachometer heads ?

If the tach head is an "original" BMW/VDO accessory, it will be stamped on the back with its ratio, 1:4 for cam driven, 1:2 for oil pump driven:

Quick update:

The tachometer showed up today and it’s gorgeous Scott!!! It fits perfect and it is much smoother than the aftermarket (no surprise there). This makes my R 50 S complete with the proper parts.

Sorry for the late reply - we're just back from the holidays.

I'm glad it worked out for you and, as I said before, I'm happy it went to someone in the group. Now you'll know just how much you're over revving that little R50S -

I'm working on getting "clearance from the tower" to ride out to the 100th anniversary. It would be great to get together with you, Lee D. and some of the other members from here.
