R51/3 exhaust crossover pipe with sump-bolt cut-away

Post by Grant R26 »

Long ago, in those golden years when Vech and Richard routinely made my life better with their excellent service and advice…Vech sold me a crossover pipe with a neat cut-away that allowed access to remove the transmission sump-bolt on a R51 without dropping the exhaust system.

I foolishly sold my R51 but have another now and I can’t find one of these “Vech-i-fied” crossover pipes anywhere on the internet.

Could anybody kindly point me in the right direction please.

Thanks, Grant MacNeill

Grant, I am sure max BMW has them as he bought all the inventory. The issue is that they may not know what it is. Vech should be on here soon to tell you the part #.

Check Vech's old website...thankfully it's still up for reference! Search for "18114090246.1 chrome exhaust crossover pipe with drain plug notch R5R71 R512 R513R68". The ".1" was his way of using the OEM part number but represents a "Vech-i-fied" part.

Thanks James and Kurt
Now that I have a part number, I’ll chase it down with Max BMW.
Cheers, Grant

The Early plunger frame twins were supplied with the "notched" cross over pipe, so when the oil was drained from the transmission, it would not pour out onto the crossover pipe, plus the "notch" allowed easy access to the drain plug with a socket and extension. I had an original crossover with the cut way notch in it and I sent it to my supplier of header and crossover pipes, and he made a small run of them, in stainless steel only, for me. I still had a few of them left, when I sold the business. Try MAX BMW, he still may have some.

While we are talking R51/3 model, could somebody tell me the correct colour for the sump to be painted.

Black or silver, I guess, but which one?

Thank you.
