As Kurt pointed out, I'm also not in favor of too low RPM in these old motors, the oil supply system is relatively low pressure and I don't want to overstretch the rope there.
Speaking of which, I have a PowerDynamo alternator system installed and also the red charging light is on when the engine is started and idling cold, though I noticed that sometimes when hot, that light goes out while idling. On the other hand, I don't want to raise the RPM too high, because on very hot days I assume it has an effect on the engine heating up while riding slowly in traffic (which I try to avoid) or at a red light.
So, that light never bothered me too much as I still get decant charging to my battery.
