custom made Clutch push rod

Post by malmac »

Well came to putting the gearbox back on today and had a couple of tasks.

1. The thread for securing the speedo drive is stripped - has been forever - time to fix it.
2. Clutch push rod snapped when it fell out onto the workshop floor

Repaired the thread in the gearbox. To keep swarf out of the cavity I inserted an aluminum plug which kept things clean.

I then thought why stay with the felt strategy. Why not use an "O" ring. Below is my custom made push rod.
I opted to induce the "O" rings to slide along the inside diameter of the input shaft rather than sliding on the push rod it's self.
Logic was to prevent the rings from tripping up on each other by having free shaft area to move around on.
If it all starts leaking I will explore the alternative.

Cheers

never mind the bluing on the old shaft. I heated that with my Map gas to see if I could pull the broken off part out.

GREAT Work. Man I wish I had the tools and skills like this!!! Alas, I am just a weekend hack that knows enough to be dangerous in the garage. BTW, your design for the clutch push rod is essentially how the ones in my Ducatis are. The difference is that they position 2 o rings about 12mm apart in little grooves.

OZ is a beautiful place! We have been there a few times. Retiring there is definitely on my list of possible countries I would be happy to live.

That is interesting what you say about the Ducati's.

If this design fails then I guess a different approach can be tried.

Any suggestions are of course welcome.
