Perhaps the recommendation came from BMW because the front are rear wheels are interchangeable, so BMW was trying to prevent some hack mechanic from accidentally putting the 4.00 on the front and 3.50 on the rear. But no PO would do that, would they;)

Sort of! It is supposedly 100mm with which is close to 4.00 inches. Plus the tire is lower profile, ie 90% of the width represents the height. 3.50x18 tire is a "perfectly" round profile. YMMV!
I stand corrected. It is not an exact duplicate.
But the Avon Roadrunners made a huge difference in the handling, for the better.
