Shock cover

Post by FL54 »

I recently noticed a dent and hole on the inside of the shock cover on my R50/2. I also found a supposed NOS shock on eBay that the seller claims has never been on a bike. It has scratches and a similar dent that seems to question the veracity of the statement that it has never been installed. My question for the experts is what could have caused the dent/hole in my shock cover and the similar dent in the one on eBay?

Thanks Kurt and James for responses. No, there’s no corresponding damage to mudguard but my knowledge of the history of this bike is limited only to last two owners. Just curious that the alleged NOS shock on eBay has a dent in basically the same location. Just wanted to know if this is a common issue . This bike is a survivor/rider. Not contemplating a restoration at this point. Just curious.

Years ago I mostly remove a dent by shoving a piece of wood up under the cover. I remember also spinning the cover to hide what was left of the dent. My main objective was to stop the black upper cover from scraping on the bright aluminum lower.

Thanks. This cover actually has a hole in it so I can see the spring inside. Not heavy gauge metal but there must have been a substantial impact to punch a hole in it.

More than likely the previous owner had an incident that damaged the shock cover. They probably did exactly what Xackly did and spun the cover so they didn't have to see the damage when they looked at the bike

You’re probably right. Can’t think of a way to damage it like that on the inside of the shock. Thanks.
