R26 Removing Rear Shock Eye From Old Insert

Post by VintageJim »

I am rebuilding the rear shocks on my 1956 R26 and the right insert unscrewed from the shock eye with no problem. I thought I broke the left insert loose but it appears the insert cracked and is spinning right above where the threads start. I tried heating it but no luck as the shock insert piece still turns. I was going to saw the insert off near where it is spinning and try to hold or cut it from the inside. Has anyone else has this problem and found a better solution? I checked a couple of suppliers and couldn't find a new left shock eye.
Thanks for any ideas!
Jim

Jim,

I have never seen this before! Not really sure what to suggest.

If you need a new left telescopic left eye (BMW part #33533054182) with the small hole, complete with new bushing, make me an offer as I have one that was wrong for a previous build that I had cad plated, etc.

I had that happen on a basket case R60/2. The shock body turns at the seam. I just junked the whole thing and found another lower eye. I think they are still available from various sources, but you already have been offered one.

I encounter the same problem.

At the end I resorted to Vech and purchased a replacement.

Yes, I purchased the unit from James Wonder and it sure made it easy! It would be a very difficult job to try to cut the old shock out of the shock eye!
