R26 with keyless crankshaft...

Post by San Arthur »

This is your typical R26 crankshaft. You can see the slot for the woodroof key needed to properly install the centrifugal time advance unit.

This is the tip of Zenaidas crank, do you notice something different?

Is Zenaida running with a R27 crankshaft? Any ideas?

This is an old picture of my piston.

I think Zenaida is running with a R27 crankshaft.

I bought Zenaida in Mexico City 30 years ago.
In 1961 changes to the Mexican regulations forced auto and motorcycle makers to build in Mexico what they could sell in the Country. BMW and other European and Asian brands left Mexico.
It was until the 90's when these protectionist rules change allowing again the importation of motorcycles.

During those years it was almost impossible and very expensive to import parts and only the ingenuity of owners and mechanics keep them running. Only a few could legally import new vehicles and pay the duties which in some cases where of 100%.

I just found a note from 2011 from Perry Bushong (RIP) mentioning about the R27 crankshaft and unidentified parts, maybe machined to spec. He was going to measure the piston against other to find out was it was from but never got to it.

Vech was kind enough of answering me:

-You must have a complete R27 crank, with a R27 rod and piston. The rod and piston is different and will not interchange.

The previous owner is currently in Switzerland. We will hopefully meet in Mexico City this weekend to uncover more Zenaida's secrets.

I'll let you know.
