Help with Inherited Bikes

Post by Skylinechili »

Greetings to all,

I've just recently joined the site as I've just inherited 3 Bikes from my father. I grew up riding with my Dad and thought he had sold his bikes years ago. He unfortunately past recently. I received a call shortly after and was told my father had a storage unit rented out in my name. To my surprise, he had tucked them away for me. Along with the bikes, he left lots of spare parts. My main objective to this post is to hopefully make contact with other owners that may have some insight and helpful tips as I get the bikes back up in riding condition. I don't really know where to start and feel a bit overwhelmed. The bikes have not been ridden and in storage since 2010. Pictures of the bikes in question attached. I appreciate anyone who reads this post and replies with advice! Many thanks

Sorry to hear of your father's death. Where are you located? Maybe there is a member near you that can provide some onsite help.

Let us know what you want/need. Do you have some mechanical skills to start in on getting them road worthy?

Thank you for the reply and condolences. I do have plenty of mechanical experience but mainly on BMW cars. I likely won't be keeping all the bikes but would like to start working on the R60 and get it back on the road. Looks like my father separated the transmission before storing which I found separate. Also found a note that the carburetor needed rebuilt. All the parts seem to be here plus a bunch of new old stock parts. I guess besides the obvious things like tires, brakes and carb rebuild, are there other things I should start with while the bike is semi dismantled? I also found an original workshop manual for the bike. Are these bikes fairly straightforward to work on? I live in Ohio, near Cincinnati.

R60
Drain oil and put 2 quarts in, Valvoline 40W VR1
Put a little oil in the cylinders.
Take the front cover off.
Get a wrench and turn the motor over with the spark plugs out.

If the floats don't leak the carbs should just be cleaned. They are the simplest carbs in the world. Clean as best you can and put them back on. Adjust to the specs for the air and idle screws as a starting point.

The real question is why the transmission is out. Hopefully it just needs a new clutch.
Once you get the tranny on you can kick it over and see what happens.

Back in the 1990s I didn't ride my R69 for about 10 years. I cleaned the points and carbs and it fired up. Took a few miles and carb adjustments to get it running perfect.

Hi, I bought a 50/2 a couple of years ago. It had stood for an unknown number of years and had no history but the indicated mileage of 25,000 seemed about right.

If you follow a manual, you may have a few years' work. Or, you can do the basics, get it running and deal with whatever crops up.

Over time, both oil and fuel evaporate. Oil turns to a thick goop in the sump pan, so drop the sump cover and clean. The fuel evaporates, leaving a thin brown layer, which can clog the carb jets, so take them apart and clean. You can also get water vapour in the tank. Water is heavier than fuel, so empty the tank and leave it to dry for a few days. Fuel also goes off, so get rid of the old stuff. Check the carb floats, they're in brass and brass cracks over time. New ones or nylon ones are available.

The rubber parts have probably hardened with age, so new swingarm boot, carb rubbers and the boot over the speedo cable, where it goes into the gearbox. That keeps rain out of the gearbox oil.

Since the gearbox is out, you can check the clutch plate and perhaps save yourself a lot of work later.

The tyres probably need changing. On mine, the front was obviously split but the rear seemed OK. 4000 miles later, the tread peeled off.

Check brake shoes and grease the wheel bearings and swingarm bearings. Note the position of the front s/arm spindle - rear position for solo, front for sidecar.

By then you should be pretty familiar with the bike - start her up and enjoy.

Sorry for your loss, your Dad sounds like a pretty cool guy.

The K-1 BMW’s pricing, have started to catch fire lately. Here is a link to one that recently sold on Bring A Trailer auction site.

Very sorry for your loss. I'm in central Pennsylvania I'd be happy to help you out with any questions. I just finished get my R60/2 up and running. It was parked since 1988.
