BMW R69S Bing Tickler Stuck

Post by kingcowie »

This is the top of a R69S bing 1/26/75 carby which has a stuck tickler.
It was completely stuck and after soaking and some persistent i can move it around 3mm with alot of pressure, but no more. Has anyone got any tips on how to pull it apart or how to free it.

I am thinking of cutting off the washer , pull the tickler shaft off ( the only issue is that the shaft has retaining burrs/wings to hold the washer and these need to be filed down to remove), replace the spring and then replace it with a 3mm circlip washer.

Appreciate any feeback

Thanks

Shane, soak it in marvel, WD40 or other penetrating oil more! Do not cut that off until it is the last resort! Trust me..... :D

Hopefully he can find a true penetrating oil other than WD-40! :o

Patience is key. Get some Kroil or PB Blaster and let it sit in that a day or two. During that time make a point to every so often pull it out and work on getting the plunger (tickler) freed up.

Ok soaked in fuel for 24 hrs with a slight improvement of movement of tickler. Now going to soak in a mixture i found on the internet for penetrating oil of vegetable oil and 20% acetone.

Will report back.

Never heard of that combo...I have heard of a 50-50 mix of automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Supposed to be really good...helped me out a while back.

That is also my way. Never failed!

Another way to go is soaking in Diesel gas, but that takes longer.

It worked ok but i have a feeling that the spring has failed, it is free to move 5 mm but not a full stroke.

I would recommend trying that combination.

Further update, a week of soaking in penetrating oil didnt get the last bit. So i filed off the wings on the tickler shaft and pulled it apart. I found the top part of the spring was glued togerther with a very hard resin. Pulled spring out cleaned up carb top and tickler. Will get another spring, drill small in shaft and the retain it with a pin. Hopefully should fix up ok.

I find it feels good to refurbish an old worn part more than to just buy a reproduction part. Sounds like you have it nailed now.
