Engine block interchangeability R60/2 R69S

Post by JCWorks »

I have a BMW R60/2. In the early 60´s, it was made into a racing bike. The frame was modified, fork was replaced and it got an R69S engine. I´m now restoring it, after it had been stored for ages and then partly restored by the previous owner. Problem is; my knowledge when it comes to older BMW´s is very limited. I loved the looks of it, couldn´t resist it, but my other BMW-bikes are from the 70´s, so I need some support on this one. I´m hereby reaching out to the expertise :geek:

My question: I have a mix of engine parts in a few boxes, from both R60 and R69S, but only one decent block and that´s from an R60/2. I´ve been offered an R69S-block and I would love rebuilding the engine with that block as a base. Are R60/2 and R69S-blocks interchangeable?

Regards

Stefan

Looks like I was too slow typing!

Welcome to the forum, Stefan! I checked the parts lists at Salis BMW and it appears that the post 1960 cases are the same as they have the same part number. Check this link:

You might check the orphan list here on the website. Click on Knowledge Base then on Orphan List at the bottom of the menu. The list is being maintained in hopes of bringing frames and engines back together...if we're so lucky!

Thank you for quick replies. Since new to the oldies-bikes I haven´t really learnt where to look for info, but your posts helped, thanks, I will bookmark the site you refer to, it will provide good info during the rebuild.

All I got to do now is convince myself to pay for an identical lump of metal with a different number stamping

Why don't you just put the top end from the R69S motor on the R60 case. Since the frame you have is so heavily modified you might not want to put too much money into the project? Build up a "bitsa bike" like this thing from whatever you already have?

Your bike is a Zabrocky type frame modification. I have an article about these frames and bikes if you care to take a look. May be of interest to you.
