65 BMW R50 Gas tank

Post by sclafani »

I'm restoring a R50 and the gas tank has a lock on the cap that I don't have a key. I cannot take the cap off. Any suggestions?

Thanks...I have an aftermarket gas cap with the letters "HK" on the top, but the key slot is much different than yours. I thought my key might work for you.

I have one of those. The keys are like skeleton keys and basically jam the cap against the stop. You might be able to use a small Allen wrench, put it in and turn it a bit to jam it against the stop. The cap will turn usually a lot until it jams. Try it and let me know how that works.

Do you also have a locked toolbox on the gas tank?
On my R51/3, it is the same key: that of the toolbox also opens the fuel tank lock.

No there wasn't't a tool box. Going to try a few more things.....if they don't work...I'm going to the grinder.

Your best parts source in the US is Bench Mark Works. It has been announced that they're being bought/owned by MaxBMW but it appears they will be around and helpful for some time.
