I have a very irritating squeak in the front brake on my ‘63 R50/2. I have had the wheel off multiple times and marked the shoes with a sharpie. Wear seems consistent across the entire shoe. After reading Duane Ausherman’s article on the front brake, I discovered that the 2 levers move at the same time. Consequently, I discovered that both springs are the same (thicker front shoe spring). I’m going to order the correct spring for the rear shoe, but my question is, could this be the reason for the annoying squeaking? Thanks in advance.
Possible but I do dont think so. Glazed drums inside or glazed shoes. Take some heavy sand (280?) paper
rough them up good. If the shoes dont have a taper at the end can also cause the shoes to make noise.

Thanks Two Cams. I have roughed up both the shoes and the drum and the ends of the shoes are tapered but perhaps not enough. I’ll taper them more next time I have the drum off. Having the wrong spring may not be the problem but it isn’t correct so I’ll rectify it anyway.
I decided to pull the wheel again to make sure I didn’t need anything else when ordering the correct rear spring. On yesterday’s ride I noticed that the squealing only occurs at low speeds like approaching a stop sign etc. Don’t know if that makes a difference, just an observation. Over 20 mph it makes no sound. Anyone see anything amiss? I might add that the shiny edge of the shoes were sanded down because on the previous wheels on the bike, they were contacting the inside of the drum.
Thanks.
Those look like semi-metallic shoes. Lots of metal in material. Could make them nosier. Check the drums are they under cut to much? Drums to thin can cause noise too.
