The thing that is probably confusing is that once you send the message, it will appear to sit in the Outbox. But in reality, it was actually sent and the info in the Outbox is just telling you that the recipient hasn't read it yet. It's kind of like a read-receipt notification.
Go to User Control Panel under your username, then click on Board Preferences. Look at the Notifications tab to see what kind of settings you have for when you are sent a Private Message.

Re: Any links to color pictures of original R50/R69S?
Full disclosure, when I got the bike I was not as into vintage BMWs as I am now and I did a few things that I would not do again (and a few I would do again). Maintenance items that I performed on the motorcycle were:
1) Replace the rubber components as they were all dry-rotted. Grips, Foot pegs, Driveshaft boot, and several other rubber parts. I would do this again as it would be unridable without them.
2) Replaced the Wide bench seat with a solo seat.
3) I painted the following parts (I would not do this again if I had another 1,600 miles motorcycle). Painted the hub caps, air cleaner and the wing nut on the rear brake rod. I did this because they had rust dots in them but wanted to clean them up and would not do this again.
4) Put new tires on.
5) Rebuilt the carbs.

The old lady is largely stainless-steel-less now and with the worn parts replaced is moving like never before in the past 20 years
