Wiring clips

Post by arrgh »

In the Blue Moon catalog is a clip, E301. This is used to secure wiring harness' to the frame in many BMW bikes from the 'thirties to the 'sixties. Does anyone know where to get them? My guess is they were also used in the automotive industries as well.

Hmmm...just looked at the Blue Moon catalog online...don't find "E301". I searched for "clip" and didn't find it. Vech might carry them. Maybe a place like McMaster Carr might have all kinds of fasteners, probably not OEM BMW.

Parts book has three sizes 135mm (p/n 61118070114), 180mm (p/n 34324066130) and 220mm (p/n 61118070118). Looks like Benchmarkworks has ..114 (135mm) and ..118 (but they have it listed as 180mm). They have a picture.

I use those stainless clips ...not always historically "stock" depending on where you use it but the are tidy looking

Vech would have them and I get them for Jan at Salis

Use them on my older brit bikes too.

There are several ties used on the slash 2's originally and I am basing all these comments and directions off a 1966 R50/2 I have that totally original with 2,300 miles on it AND a 1967 R69S that came to me beaten but NEVER touched with every original tie straps, bolts and probably engine oil knowing the previous owner. Both had the tie straps in the same place with the same configuration.

As pictured, there are two metal clips that hold the ground/neutral wire to the frame behind the gearbox. These pictures are off my current restoration and the originals pictured had rounded ends and were cad plated.

The tie straps used were various, but all metal and all black on the frame. If you need me to take pictures of where they are let me know.

I was told (but cannot confirm) that they sometimes used metal clips on the handlebar to hold the hi/low beam/horn wire. I use grey metal ties on the handlebar myself and feel they are as correct as the clips.

If you need more pictures let me know.

Outstanding! I am currently using plastic tie straps to hold the harness in position while I work on the wiring! I may well need some additional photos...

Few other pics of original clips. The clutch cable tie is particularly brutal to the frame, especially when it gets rusty.
