Help ID this Bike

Post by JimC »

Hello,

Looking for some help identifying this bike.

Passed on to me by my father, who purchased it new in Germany in the early 60s.

Still trying to find the VIN number but a couple pictures attached. Thanks for your help.

Looks like a very early R69S. Frame does not have the bracing. Engine and frame and tag numbers should all match. Engine number is on right side of crankcase, just above the pushrod rubbers. Frame tag is where you would expect, stamping on right side of steering neck. Great gift, by the way!

Interesting to see the Schorsch Meier tag on the front fender. It does appear to be early seeing the flat blade hand levers...later in the run, they had a ball on the end of the lever along with finger cutouts. The intake tubes don't appear to be the standard R69S style...might be the wrong carbs. I can't quite tell but the bump in the front cover isn't there? The shape of the Earles fork crossover could also help date the bike.

Let us know when you find the VIN and we can help a little with dating.

The flat spot on the fork is not there, and though it's hard to tell in the picture, it looks like there is no R69S badge on the rear fender. Could it be a late R69 rather than an early R69S?

What a great gift from your dad, Jim.
And he bought it from Schorsch Meier, to boot!

The model and vin number should be stamped on the data plate, which is screwed into the frame, located on front side of the steering neck, right behind the headlight.
The frame number (partially visible in your photo) is stamped in the frame, also located on the steering neck, on the right side.
The engine number is stamped on the block, located over the left cylinder.
Those are the three identifying numbers, and if you're lucky, (which you are) all three will be the same.
It will be a money pit for a while, but you will never loose the investment.
Best-
George

If you look closely, that bike is in pretty darned good shape cosmetically, The engine casing is clean and under the dust the paint looks very solid. It doesn't look like it's had hard use or abuse. It may very well not be a money pit. My bike looked about the same when I took it on. It had sat for fourteen years and my brother, the original owner, never washes or details anything, so it look really forlorn. With a thorough check of everything mechanical or electrical and with MANY hours of spit and polish, it turned out to be a very reliable head-turner.

After more scrutiny, could this possibly be an R50S? The intake tubes/rubbers are right, as are all the other things (air cleaner, steering damper). We need the serial number! R50S numbers are 564001-565634. R69S serial numbers are 655001-666320.

I think Dave may be correct that it seems to be a early r50s !!
Serial # will tell and also check the carb numbers
Very nice find if so

Really great find if so. Even better if it has the original speedo and final drive!

Dave I think you have nailed it.

Finned exhaust flanges, rounded shape to rocker covers.

Well done.
