R51/3 - R68 cable guides

Post by jwonder »

Does anyone here know of the proper use of the two cable guides that bolt under the handlebar. I looked at my one plunger and it is hard to see how each cable would route through each one. I initially thought that the two throttle cables would go through the right guide and the clutch through he left but then it may make more sense the opposite.

Any guidance on how BMW routed the cables through the two guides is greatly appreciated.

These are the two guides I refer to:

Not sure if what I have on my R25/2 is any help. I have one that looks something like that. The smaller hole seems to be bolted to the underside of the right handlebar clamp. Then the guide, which has a rubber ring/grommet on the inside of the hole, extends towards the headlight shell. All three cables on my bike, the clutch/brake/throttle, are routed through the large hole.

Hopefully these pics will help. Most folks miss this detail on their plunger restorations.

Chuck,

Thank you. That is how I will run mine. I like your R68, that is the one I am restoring now as well.

My bike is missing this bracket.
All my cables are routed feerstyle at that area.
Might use some black zip tie, maybe  .

James,
A couple more pics for you. Don't forget the clamp that bolts to the center of the bottom triple tree and holds the speedo cable and the main wiring harness.

Tommy,
Appreciated. One of my favorites. And, yes, the link you gave is for the correct lower clamp. Most originals broke over the years and never got replaced.
Thanks.
