Oil to the rocker arms area etc

Post by Micha »

Within how long from the moment the engine is started, should I see lubrication of the area?
I understand that it takes a while for the oil system to push the oil up the push rods and lets take into considaration that its an engine that was never started before.
What is considered a reasonable time?

It takes painfully long, if you have not 'primed' the oil pump. I hook a drill with a piece of fuel line as a coupler, onto the pump drive when assembling the engine. You obviously need to install the oil pan and oil, but at that stage, the engine can stay upright on the stand. I ran the drill for probably a minute before I saw oil coming out the oil feed holes at the cylinder base. I think this is absolutely necessary when rebuilding an engine. Otherwise, running a minute or more with just assembly lube/hand oiling seems problematic to me.
