License plate holder

Post by moyald »

Can anyone inform me what the correct license plate holder is for a '51 R51/3? a picture would be helpful. I have a /2 holder, but I'm not sure if it's the right one. Thx, David

David,
it should be the flat variety, not the stepped style of the Earle fork bikes and I don't know of any reproductions.

I went with a generic one from Aliexpress or so.
Simple black primed thin steel.
Does the job and it will not hurt my heart to attach the plate to it, which here must be screwed to place with tin screws ...

Sorry for the thread hijack but how does a plate attach to the stepped plate on my 1966 R60/2? I just cable tied it on but not only looks temporary but it is as I have to monitor the ties so not to lose the plate.

Not familiar with SMeyer but I take it that the reproduction would be a replacement of a different year/model that accepts our US plates? Does it mount in the same bolt pattern and look correct.

Any one fab up an adapter to add to the /2 plate holder?

SMeyer lists the flat license plate holders under the plunger bike section. They are also correct for the early Earles bikes. They usually mounted with just two bolts, but I think sometimes three. They are a pain to put any license plate on because they are so close to the fender. Originally BMW supplied another mounting plate to use with them, I think.

Thanks Dave, looked up Smeyer, thanks for the tip of where to find it on their site. Not only does my cable ties look temporary but they are. Always afraid of that plate disappearing somwhere along the road.
