R51/3: Space between the two sides of the front wheel - pic. inside

Post by Micha »

The space between the two sides of the front wheel is not uniform: on the right side there is a respectable space and I can move my palm there, while on the left side there is poor space of less than a centimeter (ca. 0.20").
All the axis and assemblies of the front drum are straight, in place and properly fastened. It looks like the whole wheel is sitting on the left side of the bike.
What made me think that maybe this is how it should be?

It should be centered. I’m guessing your hub to rim offset is incorrect. Should be about 6mm

Hi , I have a 1951 R 67 with both original wheels and both front and back are closer to the left fork leg than the right [seen sitting on the bike} so maybe that is what it is ?

Agree on this, I'd check your offset in addition to the hub itself. The off set is especially suspect if the wheel has ever been relaced. There is special tools for measuring the offset.

Micha,

Apologies for not getting back sooner, I have been quite busy.....

I just checked my R51/3 and the wheel is in the middle. In fact mine looks a bit to the left but its an optical illusion. It is in the middle.

I would make sure the your brake drum is fully seated in the wheel. It's possible the pads are not arced and are too big and stopping the brake plate from fully engaging. I would start there at the easy things.

Hope that helps!

Hi me again , just been looking at my bike cos. I want to replace my steering headstock bearings in the Summer and what ive just remembered is that you have to be sure you have both fork stantions at exactly the same length when fitting back into fork plates , and this is the bit , other wise the wheel will not be vertical and can lean either to the left or right !
This is probably and most likely case with your problem, easy fix at no cost [as long as you do the work yourself ]
