Speedometer review - reproduction - repair

Post by bellsonracing »

Here is an unsolicited tale of my speedometer repair.
Hopefully the pictures come over.
In the first picture you can see my original speedo. All dinged up and rusted.

I ordered a reproduction speedo from India from vardiaenterprises for $44 so I would have something in the headlight bucket while the original was being repaired. You can see what I got in the first picture. Obviously there are big problems, they use phillips screws, the face is crude, and the odometer numbers don't line up. The bracket on the back is too short. The worst part was the backlight is in the wrong place! You can see in picture 2. When you put the headlight on, using the supplied headlight backlight bulb, it shorts out. You cannot use that backlight without shorting out the headlight.
But, it works, and shows some number when you are at speed. For $44, and if you can re-work the backlight, it works.

I dropped the original off at palo alto speedometer, and got an estimate, which included silkscreening a new face, for $500.
That is a lot of money. I'm sure it would have come back good as new.
I got it back from Palo Alto and sent it to Joes Speedometer in Reseda CA.
He refurbished it, new bezel and glass, knob and gasket, painted needle, cleaned the face, for $250.
See finished speedo by Joe's in picture 3

The face is not perfectly white, but it's pretty good.
