Is this a mint original?

Post by miller6997 »

Show of hands: How many think that this R60 on eBay is really "mint" and "original?"

I would have just passed it by, but it's being sold out of a motorcycle museum where, I assume, it was also billed as original and mint.

Pinstripes missing.
Paint looks 'rough' in the pics.
Front brake plate levers incorrectly positioned.
Air tube rubber clamps missing.
Exhaust crossover pipe missing.
Incorrect washer on the rear fender flap M8 stud.
Bizarro M10 top fork brace right side bolt.
Air filter housing paint color not factory.
Non-factory left handlebar grip.
Kickstart frame bumper incorrectly positioned. Ouch, when trying to start the engine
Incorrect fuel tap (and it's in the 'on' position  )

All the best to seller, yet at a BIN of $25K USD, one should get more for that kind of BIN coin.

I think the above post points out enough points to determine it is neither mint or factory original.

Plus the VIN places the bike in the mid 1960s and is a R60/2 not an R60. They do use the phrase "looks MINT" in the listing, though!

Last I checked, anyone can open a “museum” and freedom of speech extends to auction descriptions.

Caveat emptor.

Ahh yes, but we don't have to go to the museum or believe what the auctioneer sprouts.

Well I hope not.

Kaplan isn't a bad guy from what I hear, he has a lot of bikes going through that outfit and it's usually pretty well represented. Clearly this one has got some serious issues in terms of originality. It looks like some pretty cheap paint too.

Maybe $7500-8500 and if it had a good proof the slingers were done by someone good then maybe a bit higher? That's what I would pay, but I wouldn't be interested much in the first place.
