We have been pulling and rubbing down the front mud guard and have found a good amount of rust under the permanent guard support bracket (see attached Image). We have pulled this bracket off repaired the guard and need to reinstall the support bracket. Does anyone have any tips for replacing these rivets ie what to use as i dont want to use a modern day rivet as it has the small hole at the top and dont want to use a nut and bolt.

Thanks
Old style peen rivets are still available or you can braze them from the inside, or just use modern rivets with a rivet gun, and smooth/fill the hole in the midle with some solder or paste. Then paint, of course.

I'd be most concerned about the 75/100 psi readings on compression. It should do 120 on both. 100 on both would be ok, but the differential of 75/100 is 25% which is pretty heavy. Sometimes rings contract really badly in long term storage so I would retest it after you run it for awhile, under some load, and see what the "hot" reading is.

Thanks will do, got a bit to go before i can get her running hot. Need to rewire first.

Parts were painted this week and need to now find someone who can do the hand painted pinstripes.

The tank and guards all had work done to it in the past, we stripped it pretty much back the metal and found some significant rust on the guards around where the support straps attach. I was keen to lead fill but then i got a quote for doing it and fainted. So we cut the rust out and then patched in new steel sections. Very pleasing was the petrol tank which was in very good shape inside and out.
