Cam timing question

Post by Bikesmith01 »

Hey guys!
I'm reassembling an R60 engine after cleaning slingers, replacing bearings, etc., and I've run into a question.

I'm trying to set the cam timing. The cam gear has a lovely, unquestionable timing mark. It's a full arrow (complete with fletching!) stamped very legibly into the gear. The crankshaft timing gear, though, doesn't have an obvious mark. If I shine a really bright light on it and look through a magnifying glass I can see a scratch on one of the teeth. That's it.

I'd be disinclined to trust a small scratch except for two things, A) It's literally the only scratch on the entire face of the timing gear. and B) The scratch lines up with the cam gear at exactly TDC.

So, I'm pretty sure that's my mark. But I just thought I'd run it past you guys. Can anyone confirm that the timing marks on crank and cam gears line up at TDC?

Thanks!
-Jon
