R60/2, anyone have a clear photo of the wiring in the headlight bucket?

Post by Kurt V »

My headlight quit operating. I’ve gone through all the prior trouble shooting history on this board and I’m starting to conclude that the ignition switch itself has gone bad. However, the previous owner messed with the wiring to the headlight socket and I’m not sure he’s got things wired correctly. He probably does, as the headlight was working. It finally quit for good the last time I pulled the key out and put it back in. To be clear, the key turns the part of the switch that is supposed to turn the headlight on, but nothing happens. Even a new key has not worked. But just to make sure, I’d like to see a picture of the original wiring in the bucket. I do have a wiring diagram, but it’s not the same as a picture.

In the attached picture there is a thin brown cloth covered wire attached to the right most connection on the headlight bulb socket. I don’t see that wire in any of the pictures or wire diagrams I’ve looked at. It looks OEM. Any idea what it goes to?Thanks!

I was going to compare your wiring of the headlight to the Doug Rinckes book but right away I see a problem. Your picture has red wires at the terminals. In none of the diagrams I can find do they show red wires there. If it were me, I'd label terminals on the headlight and follow each wire back to the other connector and write that down. Maybe then you can figure out what's what.

the small wire going to the headlight socket goes to the red side of the red/green lens for the high beam indicator light
Do you have other power to the horn/brake light when the key is pushed in
if not the terminal with yellow arrow needs to pushed in so it connects battery power for all loads
If you do have power from the switch for brake and horn then their is problem with the harness to the high/low switch or switch itself
looks like the switch harness was replaced at some point as the colors to headlight socket are not original this is ok

Thanks for the help so far! Yes, no doubt the previous owner redid some of the wiring. He cut out the wiring that went to the Hi/low headlight switch on the handle bar. I’ve tracked the wiring down and it appears that even though the colors are wrong they go to the right terminals. But the headlight doesn’t work. Although it did when I first got the bike, which is an indication that he had it wired correctly.

And, yes, the horn and the brake light work when the ignition key is pushed down.

See that you have have power on terminal 56 on the ignition switch when light is switched on (the ground lead of you meter or test light should be connected to engine/battery/frame ground as the headlight shell itself is not grounded) or terminal 31 on the ignition switch
also the ground to the bulb socket is good and the bulb is ok
If you run power to either of the 2 pins on the bulb and the bulb lights then your ground is good and power is not getting to the h/l switch or the switch is bad, very unlikely you dont have power on terminal 56 and your ignition switch is bad
