r60/2 rear fender hinge

Post by bellsonracing »

ok, I bought a replacement hinge for my r60/2 rear fender hinge, but Barrington's does not specify how to get the old one out. It seems to be sandwiched between the actual fender and another plate. How to disassemble?
I think I've seen someone just cut the plate out.

Can you post a picture of your replacement part?

Hmmm...the RealOEM fiche doesn't show that as a replaceable part. I looked at my R69S and it appears that it's integral to the fender...welded in some how. Somewhere in this long thread, I thought San Arthur had to rebuild the rear fender on his R26...seems like it would be the same issue for him.

Thanks for the thread. Scrolled through the pages, it appears that he didn't have the replace the hinge, although he did have to do major body work. One side of my hinge is completely worn through. I could just replace the one side. I know that the hinge is not a normally replaceable part. Barrington says you have to "somehow" remove the plate covering the hinge. And then I guess somehow remove the hinge. And then weld in the new one. No problem. I could just cut/grind it all out, but I'm seeing if anyone has a more elegant solution.

Here is the rear piece, the hinge is simply gone. No problem, I can fix.

Here is the front piece, the hinge is worn.

Here is the underside of the front side, with the plate that covers the hinge piece. That is my main concern. I cannot see an easy way to remove the cover piece. I could just cut into it to access the hinge. I see that is what others have done. I would probably lose the bend in the cover piece.

The plate is probably spot welded in. There are special cutters that are used in a drill. They cut around the spot weld similar to a hole saw. But you center punch it instead of a pilot hole. Look for spot weld cutters.

If I had a similar problem I would probably open the hinge a little and insert a new tube (hinge bushing or pipe bursting) and fill the corner to cover the erosion. The hinge does not handle a lot of load plus you have 2 bracket holding the flap in place.
If I understand correctly the middle part of the hinge is gone too, correct?

Ooh San Arthur, that is the type of new idea I was hoping to hear. Maybe I could try to repair the hinge tube. Maybe put a copper hinge pin in there and build it up. Then I only have to replace the other side, which is missing and not sandwiched. I'll give that a try and report back.
