Installing a 12 volt battery question

Post by Frenia »

Hello,

I am finishing my 1956 R50 and I installed a 12 volt electrical system. I have the original 6V battery "tray". From anyone running on 12 volts, any recommendations/modification to hold a 12V battery?

Thanks,

D Frenia

My recommendation would be a 12 volts gel battery like the ones for alarm systems.
It does exist in different sizes (and amp.) and you can find one with the closest dimension to the battery tray. It is then easy to shim the battery for a perfect fit.

get yourself an empty shell and try to find a battery as Fred suggests. You won't see anything from outside

The original elastic strap still works and you might have even space inside the box to place a "flying" fuse.

Do the bulbs/wiring need to be replaced for this kind of change? There's probably an "ohms law" answer to this that I have no clue! ;)

bulbs yes, cables no. Don't forget the bulbs indicating "neutral gear" and "gen charging". 6V horn can stay.

This is exactly what I did for my R69S... Great box and then I hid the 12 volt battery in there.

I am curious: why use an expensive, high amp and high crank capacity battery in a motorbike with no electric starter? For 15% of the price, with a gel alarm battery, you will have the same and probably longer life (and of course, the same advantages as an AGM: no leaks, no need to plug it during winter etc...).
