Felt Seals

I am replacing the wheel bearings in my ‘55 R50 and have new felt seals to install. Having zero experience with them, I don’t know if they should be treated somehow or installed dry or what. Apologies for what is probably a rookie question, but that describes me pretty well here. Thanks.

I installed mine a few weeks ago dry, I don't recall anything on the Barrington at least for the R26. If needed I can always lube them latter but that would saturate them I don't see the logic.

Back in the old days I would use some oil on them. This would keep them from deteriorating so fast not running dry. Im sure others here have their own remedies.

I just used modern rubber made.
But on my BSA M20 I recall that the workshop manual states to oil them with heavy grade oil.

Thanks for the replies. I also found some reference to oiling them in a few auto restoration posts that mentioned the value of lightly oiled felt not absorbing water.
