Correct way to bend a securing tab?

I have a feeling that I did it the wrong way, and that the bending tab should be twisted to the other side, tracing the groove that is machined on the oil pump gear.
The secured nut is LH, btw.
What do you think?

Micha,

The back half of the tab needs to go in the flat of the pump gear (You are about 180 degrees off) and the top is correct as you have it.

Think about it this way: If the nut tries to unscrew the top half is locked in the FLAT of the nut and the back half would be locked on the FLAT of the gear. There is no way for the nut to rotate then.

The way you have it now there is nothing to stop the nut from rotating, the tab is simply acting like a washer, not a locking device.

Best,

James

test
The tab in your picture should be bent down into one of the holes in the oil pump gear as shown buy the large arrow
then bent up behind the nut in 2 places as shown
