Removal of studs from crankcase - a warning

Post by malmac »

Well yesterday I took all the main studs out of my crankcase.

Everyone but one came out fine, given a good dose of heat.

The thing I learned the hard way was with just one stud in particular. See photos.
There is one stud where the two bored holes slightly overlap.
I had pulled the stud for the cylinder and then cleaned the thread with a tap.
Unknowingly I had just clipped the end of one of the studs which retain the front crank bearing carrier.
When that stud was removed the slight damage to the end of the stud then damaged the internal thread in the case.

Lesson: take care if you are chasing the thread on the particular stud for the barrel.
