Well we have two bikes and here is the rear swing arm from the second bike.

I thought I might just start pulling that apart and getting ready to get a rolling frame for number 2.

So I knocked up a tool to hold the drive shaft. The bell did not come off easily.
Puller and 230F with the heat gun before it popped.

So there is another small task completed.

Still seem to be avoiding the next step in the engine rebuild.

Today I manufactured an alternative battery support bracket.

I guess I could have made a complex set of tools to put in the press and attempted to press a replica, but I just didn't feel it was worth the trouble.... and I have never done it before, so it was a daunting prospect.

Different battery, different base, for the moment this should be part of getting on the road sooner rather than later.

If you need a new rear crank bearing (and it looks like you do) I have a couple spare original FAG 20207 MB C3 bearings. These are OEM brass case German bearings, not Chinese replicas available at some dealers. LMK. Price is less than a knockoff.

That is very interesting.

The problem is most likely location.
Most of the members here are in USA/Canada.

I'm standing on my head down under in Oz, so sometime postage etc become a real pain.

But lets discuss.

After a bit of puddling around the crankshaft trueing stand is ready for testing.

Yes there are additions I plan to make but other tasks call out to me.

Well the crankcase is having its makeover.

We have a couple of stripped threads for securing the sump.
So I thought how to address the issue? Yes I could use helicoils - very acceptable solution.
Then again, it would still require me gooping the threads to stop oil leaks every time I dropped the sump pan.
Not the best solution.
Then I knew some had fitted studs, which would certainly solve the oil leak problems but I also thought of later on fitting a deep sump.
A few potential problems there, so I slept on that.

Then I tried inserting small grub screws but there was not enough depth to the bosses in the crancase.
I considered thread inserts but all the ones I looked at were too broard and also did not solve the oil leaking problem.

Then I came up with the idea of putting in blind thread inserts. Well they may be available but havent found them.
So I made up my own insert.
6mmx1mm pitch inside with an 8mmx 1mm outside thread.
They have the ends sealed with braze.
Developed a small installation tool and put my first one in today. Have not put it in with stud sealant at this moment.
I guess you could call it a female stud.

So now I just have to make the rest for all the locations and I think I will appreciate the effort when the sump doesnt leak and every time I drop the sump.

We have a crankcase stamped "minus Zero" -0. I procured a set of new timing gears "zero" 0.
I wanted to be able to measure the backlash without pressing the gears onto the camshaft and crankshaft.
These new custom shafts permit me to measure up the gears with out marking them.
So the gears remain new and unused.

PS tested the backlash, adequate clearence but certainly nice and neat. Don't have a number for you. I will wait till it is installed into the crankcase at an operational level.

Well the new site looks great. Very professional.

I was going to post a photo of some work I did today but could not work out how to upload a photo from my computer to the page.
I see the button that allows one to insert a URL if the photo is already on the internet somewhere. I do not see how to actually upload a photo like I used to do.
Maybe someone could explain the process.

Thank you Kurt and James for showing me how. Now you know why my wife won't let me have a mobile phone cause it doesn't have push rods and won't run on petrol.

Below the box where the message is written, click on the Attachments tab. Then click on Add Files. That opens up a screen which then allows you to point to files on your computer for upload. After that, just follow the links to close out and submit your post.

Like most folk, there are distractions and I have had to leave the motor for several weeks.
Got back to it this week.
The crankshaft trueing stand is now ready for action and I have modified a large hammer to use for the "adjustment process".

I have never done this before so I will try and pass on some of my experience in due course.

I noticed on a few threads people asking the question, "How much of the restoration should I plan on doing myself?"
I guess it depends on how much ends up needing to be done.
It seems that doing almost everything, properly takes a lot of time and not insignificant funds.
Just saying.
