Hello Mal, I haven't checked in on your posts for a while but I just got caught up and enjoyed reading about your crank and engine building adventures. Thanks for sharing your workshop photos.

Since I build motors on a regular basis, I use a saw-split engine case created by my mentor Joe Groeger. It was created from an early case which predates the replaceable bearing carrier. In any case, the dimensions of the rear bearing carrier area are not critical. I've ground the I.D. slightly larger on a pair of 6207 bearings such that they can be easily slid on to the crankshaft without press tools. I use a shim washer on the front with the same thickness as the sheet metal slinger to replace the slinger. When a "new" crankshaft is assembled into the fixture, the critical front spacer can be determined to place the front slinger as close to the bearing carrier as possible and also get the rods centered in the bores.

The fixture also doubles as a handy method to test fit flywheel and crankshaft combinations to determine if there is sufficient clearance for the taper to compress over the oil control ring, and also provides a good method to test the accuracy of the taper interface. I will often hand stone the tapers to minimize flywheel run out.
