Strange sludge under front engine case. R51/3. Pictures.

Post by Micha »

Found it at the oil pump area. Bike stood for about 4 years, was a good runner before still standing.
Any one has an idea where this sludge came from?

did you try with a magnet to see if it is magnetic?
I would think that this is what you find in an engine which run with engine oil with no/little detergents. I assume you found the same in the oil pan. The white is interesting. In the old days, when you opened the oil cap of an engine and it was white, there was a good chance that there was water in the oil ... here it could be condensation water ...
How do the slinger look like?

my 2 cents

BTW, I used SONOL oil (local brand) from the Motorex series, with description:

20W-50
API: SF/CD
MIL-L-46152B

Is it ok for my bike?

I came back to update:
I opened the drain plug and was horrified to see what was coming out of there. It wasn't oil. It was a viscous fluid that could barely get out.
It had a difficult time to drip out, in heavy long sludge drips. Like honey (or snot, forgive my French).
The magnet in the drain plug was free of metal dust.
My question: Is this a normal behavior of used oil that was sitting inside a disabled motor for 4-5 years?
Engine went through a re-bore with new pistons before I stopped riding it, and oil was changed once a year: First I used 40 oil and then, when it was difficult to find, I switched to the 20W-50.
Or is there maybe another problem?

Post by schrader7032 »

The API rating CD means that the oil is formulated for use in diesel engines. A website also mentions gas engines, too. But as I mentioned somewhere else, diesel engine combustion is different than gas engines and I would not entertain the notion of using a diesel engine oil in any of my gas-only vehicles. This could be one reason for the sludge in my opinion.

Oh no.
Now I see what is written on the oil canister: It is mentioned to be used in passenger cars with petrol and/or diesel motors :(
Well that explains a lot.
And the fact that the used oil was standing for 5 years has nothing to do with this strange phenomena?

Post by schrader7032 »

Well, standing for that long can't be good. I'm sure there were other factors. Condensation. The oil had contaminants in it when the bike was put up.

I would think that a gas engine only oil with an API rating of SG/SH would be fine.
